Our Mission

AAMAN is committed to giving at-risk children of low-income families the resources to realize the possibility of a successful and productive life. We believe the quality of the investment we make in them and their families will help to positively shape their future. These children represent the promise of accomplishing great things and deserve every opportunity to fulfill that promise without restrictions. AAMAN inspires children to learn, adults to teach and communities to move forward together.

The first of many AAMAN's annual Retreats was on Saturday, July 18, 2009 in Huston County at the lovely "Tarantula Arms" of Donna Buckbee. As AAMAN's River Valley Cross-cultural Adoption Support Group and guest arrive, the children's eyes were wide with excitement. Parents and guest were astonished with the rustic splendor and beauty. Unlike some "Camp and Retreat Sites" located in a school setting with traffic surrounding the kids and the camp director being outrageously charged over $60.00 per day; therefore, having to charge the kids a fee to run around on school grounds with other neighborhood kids and strangers, and sit in a hot classroom, AAMAN's Retreats are FREE and located on acres and acres of beautiful land with a pond, wildlife, campfire, hiking, swimming, hunting, friendly farm animals, flower & herb garden, good food, bike trails, and much, much more!

Look at what you missed, but we hope you come to our 2010-2011 Retreats! For dates, times, Retreats, and additional information's, please contact AAMAN. Thank You and enjoy!

2005

Donna has donated her time, research and money to support AAMAN. Donna, a researcher, historian and lecturer, presents Harriet Tubman's military service and the Anti-slavery Movement in Minnesota at our Annual MLK Citywide Celebrations. Donna lives in Rushford, MN and travels throughout the United States conducting research, presenting lecturers and workshops covering black-history, slave's resistance and the impact of the slave's and minority's contributions to society.

Donna Buckbee is creating a new celebration to educate the young and old of Harriet Tubman, known as the "Moses of her people (Africans and African-Americans)."

Over the course of 10 years, and at great personal risk, Harriet led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, a secret network of safe houses where runaway slaves could stay on their journey north to freedom. She later became a leader in the abolitionist movement, and during the Civil War she was a spy for the federal forces in South Carolina as well as a nurse.

We plan to recognize Harriet Tubman on Match 10 of each year. Harriet Tubman died on March 10, 1913.

Donna has gracelessly provided her land for hunting, camping, retreats, and special events. It will soon be Camp AAMAN's new home and now serves as AAMAN Retreat's site.
