Our Mission

AAMAN is committed to giving at-risk children of low-income families the resources to realize the possibility of a successful and productive life. We believe the quality of the investment we make in them and their families will help to positively shape their future. These children represent the promise of accomplishing great things and deserve every opportunity to fulfill that promise without restrictions. AAMAN inspires children to learn, adults to teach and communities to move forward together.

In Owatonna, MN, September 25, 2008 the African American Mutual Assistance Network, Inc.-(AAMAN) was one of 29 organizations to receive books through Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation's BookStart program, a partnership between SMIF and Capstone Publishers.  This effort is part of SMIF's Early Childhood Initiative; focused on providing resources so all children can have a healthy life of learning, achieving, and succeeding.

The African American Mutual Assistance Network, Inc
. was selected to receive 400 books valued at $6,380.00 because of our outstanding early literacy opportunities for young children and their families within Southern Minnesota.  The African American Mutual Assistance Network, Inc. will incorporate the books into their Clara Fields Multicultural Literacy Program's BookStart Give-Away Programs. We plan to have three Programs: The first at the La Crescent Public Library, MN, the second at the Winona Public Library, MN and if there are any books left...a third again at the La Crescent Public Library.  At these events, young children will receive one of the books to take home and keep.

"We are pleased to be able to partner with Capstone Publishers to provide these exceptional resources to promote early literacy and learning for our young children," notes SMIF's President and CEO Tim Penny.  "We believe investing in our young children is a long term workforce strategy that will lead to a capable workforce."

"The Clara Fields Multicultural Literacy Program is to give children that are at the greatest risk of educational failure equal access to literacy opportunities and resources,"
notes Program Director and Founder Valjean J. Adams. "Our Literacy Program promotes and supports early childhood literacy in minority, at-risk, and low income families; to develop prolific readers in each preschooler by the time they start kindergarten and to greatly improve the literacy skills of those children in K-6th grade. Our Read Me A Story initiative is designed to promote literacy while strengthening that essential nurturing bond between a jailed parent and their child."
