Americans have recognized Black History annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month. We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. To address this lack of black history that is still mostly ignored today, AAMAN has created an affordable Black History Month Kit for preschoolers and elementary school age children.
Black history and culture is such a part of the American fabric and the school curriculum, that it's difficult to imagine a time when that wasn't so. February was chosen for the celebration because Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln were born in this month. Extended to a month-long celebration in 1976, Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans.
